Glendora is a city located in Los Angeles County, just 23 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. As of the recording of the 2010 census, the population of Glendora was 50,123. Glendora is a fairly posh city, with a diverse housing market and a high-scoring school district. Glendora is located inside the San Gabriel Valley, with the area code 626. There are portions of the city that are in the area code 909, which is the area code for the western San Bernardino County and areas in eastern Los Angeles County, like Claremont. The city to Glendora's east is San Dimas while Azusa lies to Glendora's west. Glendora retains its own police force, and the town has an exceptionally low crime rate. Homes in Glendora span from early 20th century cottages, modest ranch style homes, multi-story modern configurations, to expansive mansions. Glendora's most pricey neighborhoods contain many seclude, large, estate homes with wide views across the San Gabriel Valley into Downtown L.A. These neighborhoods include Bluebird Hill, Morgan Ranch, Gordon Highlands, Oakhart Estates, Easley Canyon, and Silent Ranch Estates, where homes have both been listed and sold for upwards of $8 million. The Glendora Country Club is a private-member club with an 18-hole golf course. Membership to the club is by invite only. Located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, current day Glendora was founded in 1887 by George Whitcomb who moved to California in the early 1880s. He devised the name Glendora by combining the name of his wife, Leadora, with the location of his home in a glen of the San Gabriel Mountains. Prior to its official incorporation in 1911, Glendora's chief administrator had occupied the office of President of Glendora. Glendora has a population density of 2,498 inhabitants per square mile. There is 17,237 housing units with an average density of 874 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city is 78 percent Caucasian, 1.6 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 11.5 percent Asian, 0.3 percent Pacific Islander, 7 percent from other races, and 3.7 percent from two or more races. 17.5 percent of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.
